Discovering How Water Tanks Endure Time

Towering over Lubbock are eleven water tanks. They stand there day after day and hardly anyone really notices.

These water tanks were built in the 1700’s to support the primary purpose of water then, which was being the major source of power. One of the few remaining external freestanding pipes was reconstructed as one of the water towers. The huge water tanks that serve as lighthouses are the only ones openly perceived to be most useful to the city.

Their primary purpose is to establish stable water pressures in the pipelines. The water treatment director stated that each of these water tanks can store one million gallons of water. Control of the water levels occurs through the Municipal Water Plant office.

Reservoirs are present all over Lubbock which hold water and then distributed through pipelines. Before these big overhead tanks were built, the city made use of standpipes. By keeping the standpipes filled with water, strong drafts of wind are not able to overthrow the pipes.

These huge water tanks were chosen rather than the old standpipes in the maintenance of water pressure. He said the remaining water storage tanks no longer used would be dismantled and sold for scrap metal in the near future. There is one water tank situated by the main station and it is a storage for treated water used in the building’s boiler rooms and air conditioning systems.

Shielding the interior of water tank is also important that is why they are greased with protective oil. Oxidation and the development of rust is a significant issue in the maintenance of water tanks and these are avoided through the presence of a constant electrical field within the water tanks. The water plant made an agreement with a firm to perform the maintenance works. Even minor damages on the tanks are repaired immediately, normally found after careful inspection of the tanks.

The water tanks do not set off. The excess water just flows out an overflow outlet on the side of the tank, down a pipe and into the ground. For twenty four hours a day, the water tanks are observed for signs of elevated water pressure and decreased demand.

The workers instantly decrease the number of pumps at the pumping station. These towering structures in Lubbock provide a relief from the view of flat plains and telephone posts. Some of the water tanks have already been present from the humble beginnings of this city. Water is supplied generously by the water system which is composed of these water tanks. Each water tank is able to sustain the lives of those who seek water from them.

Excerpt: Hillsborough Barracks is a walled complex of buildings between Langsett Road and Penistone Road in the Hillsborough District of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The complex covers an area of circa 22 acres (89,000 m) and dates from 1848, replacing an inadequate barracks at Hillfoot at an estimated cost of £94,000. Sheffield has good road and railway links to all points of the compass and is also close to the geographic centre of Great Britain. This makes it a prime location for a large military barracks. A barracks was required to house Hillsborough Barracks buildingsThe barracks is divided into three terraces. The first (top) terrace faces onto what is now Langsett Road. This contained the Mess establishment, quarters for around 40 officers and a similar number of servants, and a chapel. This building has a length of about 354 feet (108 m) and a width and height of about 40 feet (12 m), is three stories high and has a mixture of gothic and castellated styles. The other buildings of the barracks consisted off: The barracks had its own water supply, fed from the nearby Rawson Spring on the facing hillside towards Walkley. The spring kept 21 underground tanks filled with over half a million gallons of water. The smallest tank held 12,000 gallons, the biggest 50,000 gallons. It was rumoured at the time that this water supply would be for the benefit of Sheffields gentry who would seek refuge in the barracks in the event of an uprising. With entrances on both the Langsett and Penistone Roads it was considered to be amongst the finest and best arranged barracks in the kingdom, and as a military depot it ranked amongst the largest in the country. On the northern side of the Barracks runs the River Loxley. On the night of Frida… More:

The mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Ohio Underground Railroad Association’s list of Underground Railroad sites. This home featured many new and, for the time, revolutionary innovations. It had indoor plumbing which included a copper tank cistern on the second floor which pressurized water throughout the house. Two coal stoves had copper tanks (under pressure from the cistern system) which heated water and allowed the home to have both hot and cold running water service.

Sanitation, Water Supply And Sewage Disposal Of Country Houses, The

$19.99

Originally published in 1909, the first part of the book covers the general sanitation of country houses, brings a comparison of life in the city and in the country from a health point of view, dwells on the advantages of country life, and gives a condensed summary of the essential requirements of healthfulness in country houses. The soil, the subsoil, surface drainage, aspect, healthful surroundings and those which are objectionable, the cellar of the house, the lighting, heating and ventilation, the water supply, sewerage and plumbing, are briefly discussed. In the second part detailed advice is given as to how to procure a satisfactory water supply. The sources of water, the various modes of raising it, the storage in reservoirs, elevated tanks or underground pressure tanks, and finally water distribution, are dwelt on at length and illustrated by actual examples from the author’s engineering practice. The third part discusses the all-important question of the sewage disposal for houses not in reach of sewers. Particular attention is given to the latest development in disposal methods, to the so-called biological or bacterial purification systems, including septic tanks, cultivation tanks, contact filter beds and sprinkling or trickling filters.
