Polyurethane Insulation-Cost, Specifications and the Process

With polyurethane insulation – as with many growing eco-conscience trends and products – education is crucial.

Insulation in walls, ceilings, floors, and attics is a necessity for maintaining comfortable air temperatures in your home. Especially for people in very warm or very cold climates, the amount and quality of your home’s insulation can have a marked effect on what you and your family will experience during harsh weather conditions. Though it might seem like overkill to some, homeowners all over the country are finding the benefits of insulation.

Due to the immediate drawback of cost, polyurethane insulation might not seem at first to be advantageous. The number one drawback to polyurethane insulation is the cost; the insulation cost can triple the initial cost of fiber glass insulation alternatives.  Insulating a three story home can run the home owner between seven and eight thousand dollars. However, there are many benefits to polyurethane insulation. Specifically, it is said to be ten times more efficient than fiber glass insulation.

Specifications

Once sprayed, the insulation expands rapidly as a foam which hardens into a solid, impermeable material. Within the first twelve hours, the insulation will be 85% cured, and after 15 days, the insulation becomes 100% cured, and once cured, the insulation is zero-VOC. The solid mass of material is multifunctional:

  • It serves as a reinforced wall, strengthening the structure of the entire house and conserving wood at the same time.
  • It bonds against its borders, minimizing or eliminating thermal bridging
  • It functions as a vapor barrier, eliminating convection and preventing condensation
  • It functions as a deterrent and an impermeable barrier to insects
  • It is antimicrobial, eliminating the chance of bacterial growth (mold)
  • It functions as an ignition barrier due to its strength, minimizing the need for auxiliary materials

The Process
The insulation process from beginning to end must be quality controlled. Professionally installed insulation is applied by specially trained contractors to the inside surface of exterior walls, to the underside of the roof, and beneath floors in basements and crawl spaces during new home construction or home remodeling.

All of the equipment is contained in a box truck or trailer which arrives on site with the insulation team. It is a simple, safe and clean process where two chemicals are pumped to a high pressure foam machine. Once pressure and heat is set, the chemicals are pumped through the heated hoses to a gun where it is mixed and sprayed.

Consulting with constructors and applicators will help you to make right choice because your home is usually the single largest investment you will ever make and you need to do it right.
