Ways To Save Energy At School

ways to save energy at school
What are some ways to “go green” in IT?

I have to do a project and write a paper detailing how the IT department at my school can save energy and be more green. I have to find a particular method that I can try out to see that it will indeed save the department energy and then write a paper about how it works and everything.

The problem is, everything I’ve come up with so far has fallen through. The department either already does it, or says that it won’t work. For example, I thought virtualization would be a great way to save energy with the servers, but they already do that. Next I thought they could use wake-on-lan in the computer labs. But they thought that it wouldn’t really save enough energy to be worthwhile.

Any suggestions?

To save money on cooling the servers, employ a liquid coolant instead of electric fans, saving electricity.

Water alone has nearly 4 times the heat capacity of air, not to mention antifreeze is even higher than that. Cycle that fluid through the processors to cool them more efficiently.
