Acid Gas Injection and Carbon Dioxide Sequestration $175 Provides a complete treatment on two of the hottest topics in the energy sector – acid gas injection and carbon dioxide sequestrationThis book provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of two techniques that are rapidly increasing in importance and usage in the natural gas and petroleum industry — acid gas injection and carbon dioxide sequestration. The author, a well-known and respected authority on both processes, presents the theory of the technology, then discusses practical applications the engineer working in the field can implement. Both hot-button issues in the industry, these processes will help companies in the energy industry “go green,” by creating a safer, cleaner environment. These techniques also create a more efficient and profitable process in the plant, cutting waste and making operations more streamlined. This outstanding new reference includes:Uses of acid gas injection, the method of choice for disposing of small quantities of acid gasCoverage of technologies for working towards a zero-emission process in natural gas productionA practical discussion of carbon dioxide sequestration, an emerging new topic, often described as one of the possible solutions for reversing global warmingProblems and solutions for students at the graduate level and industry course participants |

Balancing human energy needs and conservation of panda habitat. $49.99 Resource extractive activities to meet the basic needs of humans have been the leading causes of habitat degradation and thus biodiversity loss. Complex human-nature interactions make it difficult to understand the impacts of human activities on wildlife habitat and to develop effective solutions for balancing human needs and wildlife conservation. Integrated with modern computer technology and systems modeling and simulation, decision support systems (DSSs) can ease this challenge. Such systems can provide a platform for a variety of stakeholders such as conservation scientists, policy analysts, and decision makers, to quantitatively and visually construct, analyze, and evaluate different solution options.;To demonstrate the functionality of such systems, a WebGIS-based DSS named WOW (Wolong Online WebGIS) has been developed. It was applied to Wolong Nature Reserve for giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) in southwestern China. The WOW enables various geographically dispersed stakeholders to simulate long-term spatial and temporal dynamics of human population, human energy needs (fuelwood), human activities (fuelwood collection and consumption), and thus the impacts of these activities on panda habitat. This system incorporated the results from an analysis of the spatial and temporal trends of fuelwood collection in the past three decades in the 20th century. It also considers the effects of two conservation policies (Natural Forest Conservation Program [NFCP] and Grain to Green Program [GTGP] implemented since 2000) on fuelwood consumption of rural households in the reserve.;As fuelwood is a key issue of natural resource conflict between people and pandas, one model was incorporated into the system to demonstrate the feasibility of thinning plantation forests for fuelwood. It showed that forest plantations in the reserve could sustainably provide rural households with enough fuelwood, if deliberate forest thinning plans and conservation policy regulation were |

Billion Dollar Green: Profit from the Eco Revolution $27.95 In recent years, there has been a tremendous amount of attention paid to all things “green.” Reporters, politicians, and even investment advisors have pushed green issues to the forefront of the world’s collective conscience. This overwhelming, and truly massive, shift is something every investor needs to understand—if they intend to excel in this arena. The greening of our world is perhaps the greatest wealth-building opportunity of the twenty-first century. It’s opened up profitable new doors when it comes to investing in clean tech, alternative energy, and green-related companies. Nobody is more familiar with this situation than author Tobin Smith—founder of the global investment research company ChangeWave Research. Over the course of his successful career, Smith has been the driving force behind his company’s accurate identification of major transformational shifts—from the rise of the Internet to the growth of alternative energy technology—and now, with Billion Dollar Green, he shares his extensive insights to help you find the best green investing opportunities available.Written in a straightforward and accessible style, this reliable resource opens with a detailed discussion of why the green movement has grown so strong in recent years, and how it will likely continue to grow for the next decade and beyond. Here, Smith skillfully covers the catalysts of this eco revolution—including world energy demand, CO2 emission concerns, and governmental mandates—and prepares you to profit from the changes that lie ahead. After this important introduction, Smith moves on to explore the possibilities, pitfalls, potential, and key players in specific green sectors. You’ll gain a firm understanding of promising areas within this field—from solar, wind, and biofuels to power grid infrastructure, solid-state lighting, and energy storage—and discover the core companies supplying goods needed to make the world’s green |

Biomethane $29.98 The production of biomethane, the renewable version of natural gas, from the biological conversion of organic matter at an industrial scale is fast advancing in several areas of the world. A confluence of factors is fueling the rapid expansion: cost-reducing continuous advances in the technology that make biomethane competitive to fossil natural gas, the emerging concerns over global warming and the need for developing renewable energy resources, and the looming “peak oil” consequences on the international political-economic stability and in particular the national security of the United States and several major energy importing nations. All types of organic wastes generated by our advanced society, as well as dedicated energy cash crops, can be and are employed separately or combined to produce this renewable fuel. Unlike other biofuels derived from limited food crops, biomethane is a universal natural fuel that is produced in a sustainable fashion because organic fertilizer as a coproduct of the conversion process is used to grow optimally the employed energy crops. Biomethane can be most effectively utilized as a replacement of gasoline and diesel in the transportation sector and is the only practical solution to do so in the foreseeable future. A biomethane-based road transportation system in the United States can generate over 1 trillion dollars in economic output and support 10 million direct and indirect “green” jobs in manufacturing, engineering, construction, farming, and services. Vision and political will are sufficient to mobilize the vast American natural resources, know-how and economy in order to effect full transition from oil dependency to an indigenous biomethane economy within twenty years. |
