Why Does Pond Water Become Murky?

It is a natural phenomenon for murky pond water to occur. And if you find yourself wondering why it happened to your pond, you might also consider the reasons why you want to have a pond that has clear water. Remember that the lucidity of the pond water doesn’t determine the water system’s health. Most pond owners aim for a much clearer pond because they want to see the fish as they swim in the water.

The murkiness of the pond water can fall into different cases. The first is that the pond’s bottom can still be seen although not really clear enough to witness the things happening in it.  There is another case wherein the pond’s bottom can’t literally be seen due to the extreme murkiness of the water in the pond. Technically, there are a few benefits a pond can get from misty water. Among these benefits is that it can be a good barrier for the sunlight barring the excessive growth of algae in the pond. And the other benefit is that it serves as a refuge for the fish in case of predator attacks. Despite these benefits, it is still disturbing to know that your pond contains unclear water. Something’s still not right.

If you reach the point wherein you have done all the adequate turnover and solid waste removals but still the pond water is misty, there must be other reasons why it’s like that.

Most of the time, newly-built ponds are the ones that are being victimized by murky pond water because of imbalanced eco-system. Usually new “baby ponds” take time to mature in its surrounding. Even the things that dwell in the pond like the micro-organisms and bacteria that are intended to be more mature than the pond itself are being used at the wrong time. This is why baby ponds have a higher risk of murky water.

Another reason that new pond owners can blame is the bio pond filter. Since the pond is new, the filtration system is still in the process of adjustment. It can be critical if you continuously over feed the fish in the pond. This is because it will be much harder for the pond filter to work on too much waste. However there are ways to remedy the murkiness of ponds or green water treatment .

Testing the pond water if ammonia and nitrites are abundant in the pond would be of great help as well. These compounds can also cause the unnecessary mist of the pond water.

In cases wherein the pond has matured in time, then the above reasons mentioned will not be of value. For a pond that has existed for a long time now, the blame for its murky water can be put single-handedly to the presence of suspended algae. These organisms make the water turn to green which makes it murky. In this case, you must be able to fight the further overtaking of green pond water by using effective algaecides chemical or non-chemical based. The use of UVCs of Ultraviolet Clarifiers is also effective in order to prevent green pond water.
