Alternative Energy…Have we not learned Anything!

I am quite frustrated with the terminology used to inform the public about renewable and sustainable energy. Have we not learned anything from the recent past! You may recall the attempt to label “Green Energy” aka (high performance and sustainable energy) was not exactly guerilla marketing.

Most people have no idea what “Green Building” means anyway and rightly so. So much so, the government websites that promote this are now accentuating on “Energy Efficiency” since most individuals understand the concept.  So, I ask you why are we still using the term “alternative energy” as mainstream. As long as we keep referring to sustainable and renewable energy sources as alternative energy sources who is going to pay attention. One will continue to think that fossil fuels are main stream and that renewable sources are “pie in the sky”. Perception is everything. Now that I have ranted let me explain where we are.

  • Solar Energy:  Solar Power or the suns energy is used to make electricity or heat Hot Water through solar collectors by harnessing the suns energy. This energy is renewable and sustainable and by all means very Green.
  • Geothermal Energy:  This is used as a heating and cooling source by utilizing the earth’s constant temperature. This is accomplished by digging wells or unearthing the ground to a depth where the temperature is constant at which piping is then installed where the earth’s heat is extracted and  or conversely put back into the ground.
  • Hydroelectric:  By building a dam on a river, and only letting the water pass through a small passage, you can use the force of the moving water to spin a turbine to make electricity
  • Wind:  Giant windmills spin to make electricity from the force of wind moving through the blades of the windmill.
  • Biomass:  Many plants can be turned into chemical fuels that can be burned. Ethanol is the most common, and usually corn or sugar cane is grown to make ethanol. You can burn ethanol in many cars just like gasoline. However ethanol can be problematic for some engines.
  • Cold Fusion:  Nuclear energy without the radioactive waste. First, there is palladium, a metal in the platinum family. Second, one needs a kind of hydrogen called deuterium which is found in seawater which there is an endless supply.  The third element is an electrical current. Scientists believe there is a nuclear reaction – possibly a fusion process like what happens in the sun, but occurring inside the metal, at a slower rate, and without dangerous radiation. This is still experimental but if proven would revolutionize the energy market.

As you can see there are many types of renewable and sustainable energy sources. Technology needs to improve to bring the cost down to where these are affordable for the masses. Perhaps another spike in fuel costs or an energy shortage will drive the market. In closing, making your home or business more Energy Efficient is your path to sustainability. For more information visit our website at www.eastcoastenergyconsultants.com.

Atomistic simulation studies of size effects in plasticity and dislocation patterning.

Atomistic simulation studies of size effects in plasticity and dislocation patterning.

Experimental studies of deformation of crystalline solids have demonstrated that the hardness of a material in the plastic, or inelastic, regime is inversely related to the size of the sample, for samples up to a few hundred microns in size. It has also been observed that a material’s mechanical response to deformation depends on the structure and patterning of dislocations, or defects, in the material. The underlying mechanisms behind dislocation patterning and size effects in plasticity are not well understood.;To study these effects, atomistic Monte Carlo simulations of bending a Lennard-Jones single crystal in two dimensions are performed. In these simulations, when dislocations reach sufficient density, they coalesce to form grain boundaries. A reverse-size effect is demonstrated, which can be attributed to a shortage of dislocation sources and high effective strain rate. The effects of crystal orientation, temperature, and strain rate are explored, and a scaling relationship between size- and rate-effects is proposed. In one simulation, an instability in grain boundary evolution suggests a novel mechanism for hillock formation on metal surfaces. Simulations of pure compression are also performed on both single crystal and polycrystalline samples, and the results are compared to those involving bending.;An effective means of expanding the capabilities of simulation techniques is through multiscale algorithms. The performance of a coupled atomistics-continuum formulation has been tested on surface relaxation simulations of gold, as well as 2-d and 3-d simulations of gold nanowire under applied compression. The coupling algorithm involves communication between the coarse and fine scales via ghost atoms, and the energy contribution from bonds between real and ghost atoms is weighted such that the energy is minimized based on a consistency condition of homogeneous deformation. The algorithm was updated to allow the use of Embedded Atom Method (EAM) potentials,

The main problem for the international community is developing enough renewable energy to offset the loss of oil energy. With population growth of two billion by 2037 there will be a crisis in feeding the world; including a shortage of food and energy for transportation. The author finds plenty of energy but not enough of the special energy required for transportation of food. He fears that airplanes will have major problems in acquiring useable energy.Crises of the 21st Century brings several facts to light with the hope of getting the attention of world leaders. By the year 2037 the demand for oil will increase from 5.6 million megawatts to 10 million megawatts; however, the world will be out of oil at that point. To replace this lost source of energy the author covers the various renewable energy sources and shows that by 2037 the world will fall well short of the needed 10 million megawatts of energy supplied by these renewable energy sources.

Excerpt: The 2008 Central Asia energy crisis is an ongoing energy shortage in Central Asia , which, combined with the severe weather of the 2007-08 winter (the coldest since 1969 ) and high prices for food and fuel, has caused considerable hardship for many. The abnormally cold weather has pushed demand up for electricity , exacerbating the crisis. The situation is most dire in Tajikistan . An international appeal has been made by the United Nations , NGOs , and the Red Cross and Red Crescent for around US $ 25 million to assist the government. The crisis has been ongoing and the UN has warned that millions face starvation during the 2008-09 winter. Tajikistan Tajikistan has the greatest capacity for hydroelectric power in the region (over 300 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually), but during the winter it is often dependent on importing electricity from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in no small part because the water used for hydroelectricity freezes, and demand increases. However, because of shortages in those countries as well, electricity supplies have been severely restricted. Furthermore, Uzbekistan cut natural gas supplies to Tajikistan on January 24 for payment delays. The amount of water in the reservoirs is at a record low. The giant Nurek reservoir has fallen to six meters, a worryingly low level according to energy sector representatives. Snowmelt to replenish the reservoirs is not expected until late March or April. World Bank debt and price hikes Aid supplies in TajikistanAt the beginning of January 2008, officials announced an electricity price hike of 20 percent to allow the
