Typical solar domestic hot water systems use a liquid working fluid to transfer heat from the solar collectors to the hot water storage tank. This book presents the results of a detailed investigation of a unique design and integration of electric motor and pump to circulate the liquid working fluid. The motor’s energy source is electricity that is generated from the sun by a photovoltaic module, creating an autonomous heating system. The design under review is a brushless DC motor that utilizes the magnet of a “mag-drive” pump as its rotor. This motor and pump technology, and integrated design results in both increased component utilization and increased reliability. The power switching devices of the motor perform commutation and maintain the photovoltaic module at the maximum power point. The pump magnet acts as the magnetic coupling and the motor rotor. Increased reliability is achieved through the use of solid state power electronics for commutation and the replacement of a dynamic pump seal with a static O-ring seal. This investigation reviews each major component’s characteristics under a variety of conditions to identify appropriate design choices and areas for improvement.

Life may unfold in various forms throughout the universe, constrained by universal physical laws and consistent principles of organic evolution, but propelled to great variety in detail by local conditions and the specifics of planetary history. What is known of the chemical and physical conditions of any planetary environment and its history enables us to make educated and plausible speculations about the nature and history of life on that world.Within our Solar System, there is an enormous diversity of planetary environments. On Earth, life evolved on a geologically complex, water-rich world, which today has an oxidizing atmosphere, although this was not always the case. On Mars, the surface is bitterly cold and dry, and the atmosphere very thin. Whether or not life ever existed on the Red Planet is a matter for speculation, but we do know that early in its history, Mars was a warmer, wetter world. Today Venus is a planet with an incredibly hot surface and a dense choking atmosphere, and it seems unlikely, although not impossible, that life could ever evolve here. On the gas giant planets, such as Jupiter and Saturn, it is possible that life might exist in the dense atmospheres of these cloud covered worlds, and might even have evolved on some of their exotic moons such as the sulphur-rich, volcanic world Io, Icy Europa with its possible sub-surface ocean, or Titan with its lakes of liquid petroleum gas on the surface.Discussions of the great variety of life forms that could evolve in these diverse environments have become particularly relevant in recent years with the discovery of around 300 exoplanets in orbit around other stars and the possibilities for the existence of life in these planetary systems.

As energy consumption continues to rise while conventional energy supplies become ever more depleted there is an increasing demand for renewable energy technologies, especially solar energy in the resource rich southwestern United States. In the 1970s, researchers proposed utilizing particle suspensions in liquids to enhance the solar absorption. More recently, nanoparticle-liquid suspensions have been proposed as a means to enhance solar collector efficiency through direct absorption of the incoming solar energy. For direct absorption systems, the base fluid plays an important role in the absorption of the effective medium therefore a method for experimentally determining the extinction coefficient of four fluids commonly used in solar thermal energy applications was developed. These fluids do not absorb solar energy well and the use of nanoparticle enhancement is necessary. Through the use of a micro-solar collector, the efficiency improvement predicted by earlier models was tested for varying nanoparticle materials, volume fractions and particle shapes. Earlier studies as well as the current work show that the size and shape of the nanoparticles as well as the scattering mode all impact the amount of energy absorbed and emitted by the nanofluid. In order to optimize the efficiency of a direct absorption solar system the optimum nanoparticle-liquid combination needs to be developed. The optimum nanofluid for a direct absorption solar thermal collector is investigated numerically through the variation of particle size, collector geometry, and scattering mode. With a demonstrated efficiency improvement due to a direct absorption solar collector utilizing nanofluids, a comparative analysis was performed comparing the environmental and economic impacts for domestic hot water systems. Results show that for current nanoparticle cost and a 3 percent improvement in efficiency the nanofluid-based solar collector at the end of its life has the same economic savings as a

Chapters: Thermophile, Geyser, Hyperthermophile, List of Geysers, Lardarello, Sol de Mañana, Geyserite. Excerpt: A geyser is a spring characterized by intermittent discharge of water ejected turbulently and accompanied by a vapour phase (steam). The word geyser comes from Geysir , the name of an erupting spring at Haukadalur , Iceland ; that name, in turn, comes from the Icelandic verb geysa , “to gush”, the verb itself from Old Norse .The formation of geysers is due to particular hydrogeological conditions, which exist in only a few places on Earth, so they are a fairly rare phenomenon. Generally all geyser field sites are located near active volcanic areas, and the geyser effect is due to the proximity of magma. Generally, surface water works its way down to an average depth of around 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) where it contacts hot rocks. The resultant boiling of the pressurized water results in the geyser effect of hot water and steam spraying out of the geyser’s surface vent.About a thousand known geysers exist worldwide, roughly half of which are in Yellowstone National Park , Wyoming , United States . A geyser’s eruptive activity may change or cease due to ongoing mineral deposition within the geyser plumbing, exchange of functions with nearby hot springs, earthquake influences, and human intervention. Jet-like eruptions, often referred to as geysers , have been observed on several of the moons of the outer solar system. Due to the low ambient pressures, these eruptions consist of vapor without liquid; they are made more easily visible by particles of dust and ice carried aloft by the gas. Water vapor jets have been observed near the south pole of Saturn ’s moon Enceladus , while nitrogen eruptions have been observed on Neptune ’s moon Triton . There are also signs of

Chapters: Heat Pump, Stirling Engine, Geothermal Heat Pump, Refrigerator, Geothermal Heating, Vapor-Compression Refrigeration, Ecocute, Absorption Refrigerator, Heat Pump and Refrigeration Cycle, Thermoacoustic Hot Air Engine, Vortex Tube, Absorption Air Cooler, Air Source Heat Pumps, Direct Exchange Geothermal Heat Pump, Coefficient of Performance, Water Cooler, Electrocaloric Effect, Fluidyne Engine, Gustav Lorentzen, Stoddard Engine, Hybrid Heat, Triathlon. Excerpt: An absorption air cooler or heat absorption air cooler is an air cooler which uses a heat source (e.g. solar, kerosene-fueled flame) to provide the energy needed to drive the cooling system. Both absorption air coolers and compression air coolers use a refrigerant with a very low (sub-zero Fahrenheit ) boiling point . In both types, when this refrigerant evaporates or boils, it takes some heat away with it, providing the cooling effect. The main difference between the two types is the way the refrigerant is changed from a gas back into a liquid so that the cycle can repeat. A compressor refrigerator uses an electrically-powered compressor to increase the pressure on the gas, and then condenses the hot high pressure gas back to a liquid by heat exchange with a coolant (usually air). Once the high pressure gas has cooled, it passes through a pressure release valve which drops the refrigerant temperature to below freezing. An absorption refrigerator changes the gas back into a liquid using a different method that needs only heat, and has no moving parts. The other difference between the two types is the refrigerant used. Compressor refrigerators typically use an HCFC , while absorption refrigerators typically use ammonia . Principles A schematic showing the absorption cooling principle Absorptive refrigeration uses a

Excerpt: A geothermal heat pump or ground source heat pump (GSHP) is a central heating and/or cooling system that pumps heat to or from the ground. It uses the earth as a heat source (in the winter) or a heat sink (in the summer). This design takes advantage of the moderate temperatures in the ground to boost efficiency and reduce the operational costs of heating and cooling systems, and may be combined with solar heating to form a geosolar system with even greater efficiency. Geothermal heat pumps are also known by a variety of other names, including geoexchange, earth-coupled, earth energy or water-source heat pumps. The engineering and scientific communities prefer the terms “geoexchange” or “ground source heat pumps” because geothermal power traditionally refers to heat originating from deep in the Earth’s mantle. Ground source heat pumps harvest a combination of geothermal power and heat from the sun when heating, but work against these heat sources when used for air conditioning. Like a refrigerator or air conditioner, these systems use a heat pump to force the transfer of heat. Heat pumps can transfer heat from a cool space to a warm space, against the natural direction of flow, or they can enhance the natural flow of heat from a warm area to a cool one. … More:
