A Handbook on Low-Energy Buildings and District-Energy Systems: Fundamentals, Techniques and Examples

A Handbook on Low-Energy Buildings and District-Energy Systems: Fundamentals, Techniques and Examples

$290

Winner of Choice Magazine – Outstanding Academic Titles for 2007 Buildings account for over one third of global energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Reducing energy use by buildings is therefore an essential part of any strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and thereby lessen the likelihood of potentially catastrophic climate change. Bringing together a wealth of hard-to-obtain information on energy use and energy efficiency in buildings at a level which can be easily digested and applied, Danny Harvey offers a comprehensive, objective and critical sourcebook on low-energy buildings. Topics covered include: thermal envelopes, heating, cooling, heat pumps, HVAC systems, hot water, lighting, solar energy, appliances and office equipment, embodied energy, buildings as systems and community-integrated energy systems (cogeneration, district heating, and district cooling). The book includes exemplary buildings and techniques from North America, Europe and Asia, and combines a broad, holistic perspective with technical detail in an accessible and insightful manner.

A Solar Buyer’s Guide for the Home and Office: Navigating the Maze of Solar Options, Incentives, and Installers

$14.95

Solar power, once a fringe effort limited to DIY enthusiasts, is now fast becoming mainstream. Many home and business owners are curious about solar electric and solar thermal systems, and wonder how to go about getting a clean energy generation system of their own. The vast majority will hire a professional installer to do the job. But what should they be asking of these installers? What system makes the most sense for their home or office: solar electric, solar hot water, solar heating, or some combination of these?A Solar Buyer’s Guide for the Home and Office explains the options so that property owners can make the right choices both for their energy needs and their financial security. Understanding how solar power systems work will enable readers to be informed customers when dealing with professional installers-the book also provides advice on how to select a qualified installer and understand the expanding variety of tax credits and other incentives that are popping up around the country. The market for solar systems has been growing at an exponential rate and strong tax credits ensure continued growth even in a sluggish economy. Many of those who would like to catch this undeniable wave of the future are held back by widespread confusion. A Solar Buyer’s Guide for the Home and Office clears the air, allowing property owners to move forward with confidence to make their homes and offices more comfortable, environmentally sound, and secure against wild swings in energy prices.

“Petting the Cat” by Robin Danner: After months of watching her Coven’s mating rituals, and not being allowed to participate, Jillian Welch is primed and ready for her marriage bed. So much so, that she’s even looking forward to marrying the powerful and possibly evil Earl of Evansdale. Colin Donegal knows his brother’s secret–the Earl is a warlock who needs Jillian’s virginity to strengthen his power and make him indestructible–and he’ll stop at nothing to thwart this evil plan; even if it means revealing a secret of his own? “Spell-Crafted for Pleasure” by Darragha Foster: Salem Grier is a purveyor of a fine collection of sins, her own and those she sells in her occult shop. But everything changes when a new shipment arrives with a haunted Viking Member, a whalebone dildo. Salem inadvertently awakens the spirits trapped in the bone, only to discover she is their passageway back to the living. Now it is up to her to decide. Which brother will go free, and which will remain imprisoned in a thousand-year-old sex toy? And how far will she go to find out? “Hounded” by Xandra Gregory: It was only supposed to be a simple bargain with the Moon Goddess, or so Lin Itoh thought. Until she discovers the hot stranger she just had a very intimate encounter with is actually Rex, one of Diana’s Hounds. The Hound Lin is supposed to be looking for. Things get even more complicated when Lin discovers Rex had very good reason for leaving. And even better reason for not being found. To keep the inner solar system from erupting into chaos, Rex and his Packmate Max must show Lin that their animal instincts are exactly what she needs to heal the ailing Moon Goddess … and her own remoteheart.

 American Power

American Power

$111.49

New – Mitch Epstein’s latest project tackles one of the most loaded issues on the nation’s agenda: what and who powers America? Between 2003 and 2008, prompted by the evacuation of an environmentally contaminated Ohio town, Epstein traveled the United States to document the country’s energy “hot spots,” where fossil fuel, nuclear, hydroelectric, wind and solar power are produced, encountering further contaminations, Homeland Security obstacles, corporate invincibility and the occasional token of

An Investigation of Pv Powered Brushless DC Motors for Solar Pumping - An Autonomous and Elegant Integration of Electric Motor and Pump for Use with

An Investigation of Pv Powered Brushless DC Motors for Solar Pumping – An Autonomous and Elegant Integration of Electric Motor and Pump for Use with

$76

Typical solar domestic hot water systems use a liquid working fluid to transfer heat from the solar collectors to the hot water storage tank. This book presents the results of a detailed investigation of a unique design and integration of electric motor and pump to circulate the liquid working fluid. The motor’s energy source is electricity that is generated from the sun by a photovoltaic module, creating an autonomous heating system. The design under review is a brushless DC motor that utilizes the magnet of a “mag-drive” pump as its rotor. This motor and pump technology, and integrated design results in both increased component utilization and increased reliability. The power switching devices of the motor perform commutation and maintain the photovoltaic module at the maximum power point. The pump magnet acts as the magnetic coupling and the motor rotor. Increased reliability is achieved through the use of solid state power electronics for commutation and the replacement of a dynamic pump seal with a static O-ring seal. This investigation reviews each major component’s characteristics under a variety of conditions to identify appropriate design choices and areas for improvement.
