What do I need for a solar-powered fish pond?
First off, I am not sure if I need just a pond filter, or a pump as well, can someone explain the difference a little better? It would be only 100 or 150 gallons, made from a watering trough-thing for horses (therefore not only a fish-safe container, but I wouldn’t have to bury it as it is made to withstand the weight of the water compared to preformed liner without support). The only fish I plan to stock with are 3 common goldfish (currently about 4-5 inches in length).
I wish to use solar pumps or whatnot, as my city reportedly receives 302 days of sunshine on average. Does such a solar thing save energy to work at night? Or does it only function during daytime hours and early evening? If so, am I stocked low enough in these 3 fish for 100 gals to be OK with that? (outside temp at night in winter can often get to 40-50 degrees; they could winter as long as no ice forms from wind chill, right?)
Thanks for any other tips I could use here!
Some solar pumps come with battery backups so they can run for a short amount of time at night. However some cheaper solar pumps are amusingly feeble, producing a trickle which I could probably urinate faster than.
As your pond will not have a solid, mains-powered filter and the flow can fluctuate according to the weather, it is best not to get 3 common goldfish. They are very messy fish and need about 50 gallons each in a filtered pond, never mind an unfiltered pond. It is safest to use a 100 gallon per common goldfish rule when stocking a pond without a biological filter.
If you do want to keep fish in your pond, two or three fantail goldfish could work as long as you kept the pump running as long as possible. However fancy goldfish are not as hardy as common goldfish, so keep an eye on them during the winter. If the water freezes, it’s a good idea to bring them in for the winter. There are some tales of them going through the winter, however this only really happens in deep ponds (4 foot deep or so).
If you wanted to keep the water clear and green-free, make a DIY filter for your pond to run during the day. This does not have to be big or particularly extravagant, you just need a larg-ish plastic tub, tubing and a drill. Hook the solar pump up to the box with a standard plastic siphon tube, and drill a hole in the box so that the water can be pushed through into the box with the pump. Drill another hole at the bottom of the box, and connect a tube to it flowing back to the pond. Place the filter by the side of the pond, making sure it’s above the water level. Add the filter media to it and turn it on. The water should flow through the tube from the pump, trickle through the media in the plastic tub, and trickle back to the pond via the hose going from the bottom of the box back to the pond.
If you got a mains-powered pump and a proffesional filter, you could get away with three common goldfish, however if you can only have solar-powered pumps, your best option is two or three fantail goldfish.
