do Energy Efficient bulbs make a slight buzz sound?

i got these fluorescent bulbs at costco, and they have a faint buzzing noise. I’m returning them, but is this normal? the only difference from the other fluorescent bulbs I have is that they are “whiter with bluish tint”.

Get ones with an electronic ballast. They step up the frequency of the electric current that runs the bulb from 60 hertz to many kilohertz, often beyond the range of human hearing. Not only does this reduce the buzzing sound, it also eliminates visible flickering as well. The bulbs you have are most likely a normal ballast (just a coil of wire, like a transformer) and starter inside the bulb’s plastic housing, because they’re cheapo ones. Electronic ballasts contain circuitry similar to that found in a computer power supply ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supply http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/flyback_converter ) except that their output is a voltage high enough to drive a fluorescent lamp. If the color gets annoying, get LED bulbs instead. They are a bit expensive at first, but the Energy Savings (even better than a CFL) quickly pay off. Oh, and did i mention that they also last longer than CFL’s and contain no mercury?

Solid-state lighting shows great promise as a source of efficient, affordable, color-balanced white light. Indeed, assuming market discount rates, the present work demonstrates that white solid-state lighting already has a lower levelized annual cost (LAC) than incandescent bulbs and that it will be lower than that of the most efficient fluorescent bulbs by the end of this decade. However, a large literature indicates that households do not make their decisions in terms of simple expected economic value. The present analysis shows that incorporating the findings from literature on high implicit discount rates from households when performing decisions towards efficient technologies delays the adoption of white LEDs by a couple of years.;After a review of the technology, the present work compares the electricity consumption, carbon emissions and cost-effectiveness of current lighting technologies, when accounting for expected performance evolution through 2015.
